Amy Montenegro's story in mixed martial arts is a story of ups and downs and then a really big up. Sort of like the real life version of Rocky, except let's skip part five because that one was kinda stupid and Sylvester Stallone's kid has zero acting ability. Let's start with the amateur career.
Only this time the fight with Chan was as a pro. I am not Amy and can't read her mind, but to elect to turn pro off of that win, one can only assume she had gotten her confidence back. Maybe it was confidence, maybe it was a desire to make money at this thing, maybe it was necessity, maybe it was Mary Poppins giving her a spoon full of sugar, whatever the reason, she turned pro. After five straight losses, she turned pro and the pro career was off to a good start.
Anyone who doubted her soon looked dumb, and not betting all you have on final Jeopardy and then not having an answer for the question kind of dumb, but doubting someone with a ton of hear dumb. Because Amy just like her amateur career, started off with a bang, winning and finishing her opponents. She had just one minor hiccup on her record when she made her Invicta FC debut in February of 2015. On that night she took a unanimous decision from Brianna Van Buren, and a much bigger audience found out who Amy Montenegro was.
About five months later she returned to that Invicta cage to face Jamie Moyle. Sadly on this night Amy did not get the win, but she did gain even more respect as they put on a Fight of the Year contender, Rocky and Apollo just taking turns beating on each other. The result was not insignificant, but both fighters came out with their stock rised.
She wasn't about to sit and dwell on that loss and like Charlie Sheen trying a different show quickly after leaving Two and A Half Men, Amy got right back in there facing Glenna Avila. Except unlike Sheen's show, this was a good fight with a good result as Amy got the win.
Next up was trying out for The Ultimate Fighter, AKA TUF. Amy lost her fight to get into the house in January of 2016 and has not been in the cage since. Unlike with previous losses, Amy wanted to take the time to fix what needs fixed. not rush into a fight just for the sake of fighting. Well the time has come to see Amy back in the cage.
On January 14th she returns to the Invicta FC cage to take on Celine Haga. Haga's 10-13 record doesn't sound impressive, however she is a very skilled opponent riding a a four fight winning streak and had a run early in her pro career where she lost more fights than Bruce Willis movies lose money. So she is a tough opponent who Amy will surely be taking very seriously.
So the Amy Montenegro story is one of belief and overcoming obstacles and above all, not giving up. She didn't quit when many would have, she believed in herself when others may not have and she made those others believe in her. Winning is easy, losing and coming back and being better is not easy. Amy took the long route to get where she is, but that long route is what made her who she is. Who is she? She is the real life, female Rocky and in a few days the next scene in her own personal movie takes place and as she has proven, betting against her is not very smart.
